TAKE SPECIAL NOTICE
NEW INFORMATION ON THE TAXING OF VA RETRO PAYMENTS
The IRS contacted Comrade Larry Grindland and asked that we include the following information in this Month’s Echoes.
The Combat-Injured Veterans Fairness Act of 2016 required DOD to notify approximately 130,000 veterans that a previously reported lump sum disability payment that they received was incorrectly reported as taxable. These Veterans are entitled to a refund of the tax paid ontheir severance payment. The DOD sent letters informing them of the amount reported incorrectly and how to file a claim. These letters were mailed between July 5 and July 20 and include a special IRS tollfree number 833-558-5245, ext378, instructions will be provided for the form 1040x, Amended US Individual Tax Return. If veterans experience delays in getting their refunds processed they may contact Taxpayer Advocate Service @ 877-777-4778.
